Driftless Beef Conference set for Jan. 30-31
Do you have a hard-to-buy-for farmer in your life? Here’s a great suggestion for a Christmas gift – registration to the Driftless Beef Conference! What could be better than the gift of education? The second annual four-state Driftless Region Beef Conference will be held on Jan. 30-31, 2014, at the Grand River Convention Center in Dubuque.
Extension plans commercial manure application training Jan. 7
Commercial manure applicators should plan to attend the Commercial Manure Applicator training program scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2014 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will conduct the required three-hour training workshop at that time. There is no fee to attend the workshop, but commercial applicators must register by December 30, 2013 by contacting the ISU Extension Benton County office at 319-472-4739.
Girls Alumni basketball: Area players to return to court Dec. 28
The Vinton Community Foundation is sponsoring the first-ever Vinton-Shellsburg/Garrison Women''s Alumni Basketball game on Dec. 28, in Vinton.
All former players are invited.

After 5 Club plans dinner Dec. 10; Mildred Kelly to speak
The Vinton After 5 club will be hosting Mildred Kelly from Owatanna, Minn., on Tues. Dec 10, at 6:15 p.m..at the Fourth St. Diner. She will be speaking on "Healing for a Handicapped Heart."
The club asks the ladies to bring a favorite angel and tell why it's special. Participants will be singing Christmas Carols and Mildred Kelly also sings along with her message.
Benton Scholarship Foundation sets Soup for Scholars for Dec. 17
The Benton Scholarship Foundation (BSF) is hosting their annual fundraiser Soup for Scholars on Tuesday, December 17 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Benton Community Middle/High School, Van Horne. The Benton Girls Basketball team will also be hosting Center Point/Urbana that evening.
The Soup for Scholars is a free-will donation event.
Post-Prom Cookie Walk set for Dec. 14
The Vinton-Shellsburg Post Prom Christmas Cookie Walk will take place Saturday, December 14, 2013, from 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M. in the High School Commons.

PEO Chapter HG will meet at the home of Kathy Mossman on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 9:00 AM. This will be a Christmas Social gathering.
Second Santa photo session for pets and people set for Saturday
Have you been so good this year that you just have to tell Santa what you want for Christmas? Well, good news! Santa is going to be in town on Saturday from 12-4! Come meet Santa at 211 West 4th Street (across from the Palace Theatre) to give him your wish list and to get your picture taken!
Pets are welcome (and encouraged!) but not required. Today is deadline for Breakfast with Santa sign-up
Breakfast with Santa takes place this Saturday, December 7th, at 9 AM at the Vinton Skate & Activity Center.
Bring your appetite and wishlist because Santa Claus is coming to town! Load up the entire family and join us for a delicious hot breakfast and visit with Santa as we celebrate this festive time of year. The cost is $5 per person and all registrations must be submitted by Wednesday, December 4th.
Singers & Hand Bell Ringers to perform on Sunday at 2 pm
Singers & Hand Bell Ringers from throughout the community are coming together at 2 pm on Sunday, December 8th to present: Joy to the World! A Celebration of Christmas Carols.
